Pool Mechanism Screening

In this backyard makeover, the homeowner was challenged by a very obtrusive placement of his pool pump mechanisms.

Rather than building a small fence or screen to hide the pump, we created a living screen of bamboo.  This addition allows access to the pump while hiding the mechanicals behind a contained wall of evergreen foliage, matching the rest of the poolside planting.

Amazing, but true!, this living wall was created in just over 1 year from the small number of plants seen, here.

Clumping Bamboo Fence - Bambusa multiplex 'Riviereorum'

A personal testament to the usefulness of bamboo, these photos are from my residence, just north of Lake Pontchartrain in Madisonville, LA.  Following hurricane Katrina, our property lines were left damaged with large gaps in the remaining native foliage.

This is one of a number of plantings which quickly re-established our privacy following the storm.  Though all clumping bamboos prefer full Sun, this planting is maturing quite nicely while only receiving 4+/- hours of direct Sun per day.  'Full Sun' plantings will likely mature noticeably faster.

Bambusa multiplex 'Riviereorum', our clumping bamboo workhorse, when planted on 3 foot centers, will mature to form an impenetrable barrier down to ground level, with its characteristic, small leaves and cascading foliage above.  For more information on Bambusa multiplex 'Riviereorum', please see our photo catalog page on clumping bamboo.

Generator screening / 'Greener' Parking

Many jobs, one small space!  This area serves its Uptown New Orleans home in several ways - gated, off-street parking, free standing storage, backup generator along with passage to this home's gracious 'courtyard' entryway, all tucked, neatly, in place with little room to spare.

Our challenge was to bring some leafy green to soften this parking area's immediate impression, screening storage and generator mechanicals while still allowing access for service.  Bamboo to the rescue!  As one of our tightest, contained plantings, appropriate plant choice was critical.

The needs were very specific -straight, vertical, short-limbed, leafy to the bottom and able to screen in a very shallow depth!  The only choice was Pleioblastus amarus.

During this first year of growth, dried, rolled 'reed' screening was placed for a visual 'assist' until P. amarus can fill this space.  As you see, it's well on its way!

Northshore Privacy Screen

With ample room for creating deeper, contained beds, this Northshore home was a great candidate for the quickly maturing power of bamboo!  With an elegantly, understated pool addition underway, these homeowners came to us for assistance in providing some graceful privacy for their pool area.

This side screen was created using Phyllostachys aurea ('Golden' bamboo), chosen for its upright stance and foliage density - used here to discretely block the line of sight from a neighbor's second story window.

New Orleans Poolside

One of our favorite installations, this lovely home is one of
New Orleans' post-Katrina success stories.  Having waited so long to return to their home after the storm, these homeowners were ready to look to the future.  Faced with a common challenge, the need for quickly growing, poolside screening and privacy in a very shallow (3.5 ft) bed, they came to us for options.

To complement their home's warm, contemporary restoration, golden bamboo was chosen.  Its straight, vertical stance lends itself to this small space, and as this screening matures, its culms will add their scupturally straight,
columnar quality to this modern home renovation.

This densely planted, contained poolside screen beautifully demonstrates bamboo's speed and ability.
